Traditional British Sunday roast

The "Toby Carvery The Friary" in Swindon, UK, is a classic example of the renowned Toby Carvery chain, which has made a name for itself as the "Home of the Roast." It is located in an area that is easily accessible for both locals and visitors, offering a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere typical of this chain. The restaurant places great emphasis on presenting the British Sunday roast in its best form, with the quality of ingredients and careful preparation at its core. For over 35 years, Toby Carvery has stood for hearty, traditional cuisine, and "The Friary" is no exception.

Best Yorkshire puddings in Swindon

Culinary offerings revolve around the carvery experience, where guests can serve themselves from a counter with a selection of slow-cooked meats. The tender roast beef, served with a rich gravy and melting in your mouth, is particularly popular. The roast turkey is also often highlighted, especially for its juicy texture and classic flavor. Accompanying this are the famous Yorkshire puddings, freshly baked daily and renowned for their light and crispy texture. The side dishes are another highlight: the roast potatoes are hand-ruffled to ensure extra crunch, and seasonal vegetables, such as perfectly cooked carrots or crisp green beans, complete the experience. For those seeking variety, there are also vegetarian options, such as a vegetable tart with vegan glaze, prepared with the same care.

Family-friendly carvery restaurant

In addition to the carvery offerings, breakfast features an all-you-can-eat buffet that includes classics like fried eggs and sausages, but also offers the chance to enjoy Yorkshire puddings in the morning—a unique but popular addition. Desserts include sweet temptations like a warm apple crumble served with vanilla sauce, praised for its balanced sweetness. The drink selection is diverse, ranging from traditional ales to wines, as well as hot beverages like Lavazza coffee, perfectly complementing the meal.

All-you-can-eat breakfast options

The ambiance at "The Friary" is functional and cozy, with decor that blends practicality with a touch of British pub tradition. It is a place that doesn’t stand out for extravagant design but rather for its warm, inviting atmosphere. The service is often described as friendly and efficient, with staff eager to provide guests with a pleasant experience. Families particularly appreciate the uncomplicated atmosphere and child-friendly options. However, there are occasional criticisms, such as regarding the temperature of the food or organization during peak times when the restaurant is busy.

Decent carvery, good Sunday lunch options, very busy so book in advance on Sundays, tables are close together to get max number of people in so not the place if you like peace and quiet and not to be overheard

The last time I visited and baring in mind I'm travelling from hungerford as I find the newbury toby is not great very hit and miss and always short staff I do love this place but on my last visit I was very very disappointed with the amount of meat plated by the chef!! Also the young girl who was taking care of our table looked like she really did not want to be there and was not at all helpful!! Also as I'm a terminal cancer sufferer I have to be careful making sure my food is hot and on this occasion it was not!! I do love this place but this particular day was very disappointing. I'm unsure of a return and I'm always asked where I would take friends family I meet up with regular .

Went on the £4.99 breakfast deal, as we'd never done the breakfast before and it was so lovely. I think all of the openreach team was in there, but still plenty of food left

The food is lovely but the Yorkshire puddings can be either amazing or just too much. The service is excellent and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about their food. The tables are very close together so it can be a bit crammed at times. Overall great place and would highly recommend. The puddings are lush.
